Julius Malema was elected unopposed as the president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as delegates voted for the party’s top leadership.
The party is holding its third National People’s Assembly at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg to elect new leadership for the next five years and deliberate on other issues.

As previously reported, Julius Malema said he was absolutely available to lead the EFF for a third term and several provinces backed him for the position.
Notably, the party’s former spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi whom some delegates wanted to contest in the elective conference was nowhere to be seen. Earlier on Saturday, Malema confirmed that Ndlozi is not at the ongoing National People’s Assembly.
Surprisingly, ahead of the nominations, the party announced that positions for the top six will be uncontested. However, a female delegate from Mpumalanga nominated herself for the position of deputy president, saying they should be brave enough to contest any position in the EFF.
The party’s former secretary-general, Godrich Gardee, who was poised to be Malema’s deputy, returned to the top leadership. At the same time, Omphile Maotwe and Marshall Dlamini retained their positions as treasurer-general and secretary-general, respectively.
Nontando Nolutshungu, a member of the Portfolio Committee on Transport in Parliament, replaced Veronica Mente as national chairperson, while the party’s spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys, replaced Poppy Mailola as deputy secretary-general.
