A significant number of Indian students have traditionally chosen Canada for higher education, with many coming from Punjab. However this week, Indian students in Canada were reported receiving emails requesting them to resubmit important documents such as study permits, visas, and educational records, including marks and attendance, the Times of India reported. The request from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the government body overseeing foreign students, has sparked widespread anxiety among international students, many of whom possess visas valid for up to two years.
However, in the past few years, there has been a notable decline in the number of students from India applying to study in Canada. The applications dropped by about 40% in the latter half of 2023, which can be attributed to several factors, including the Canadian government’s recent increase in the financial requirements for international students. Starting in 2024, students needed to show a financial Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIP) of $20,635, which is double the previous requirement of $10,000. This change, combined with high tuition fees, travel costs, and other financial burdens, has made it more difficult for students and their families, especially those from Punjab, to afford education in Canada.

As Canada sees a decline in the number of Indian students applying for higher education due to increased financial requirements and other challenges, this country is emerging as a popular alternative for Indian students.
With its strong educational system, minimal tuition fees, and ample opportunities for students to stay and work after graduation, Germany has become an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students. According to the media reports, experts indicate that recent changes in policies concerning international students are prompting many to explore Germany as a preferred destination for higher education.
The increasing tuition fees in Canada have become a financial burden for many students, making it a less appealing destination for higher education. In contrast, Germany offers a range of scholarship opportunities that can significantly alleviate the financial pressure on international students. Additionally, many public universities in Germany charge little to no tuition fees, further enhancing its appeal as an affordable education option.
Additionally, many universities in Germany do not require the IELTS exam for admission, which simplifies the application process for students. This eliminates an extra barrier that students may encounter when applying to universities in other countries, such as Canada or the U.S., where English proficiency tests like IELTS or TOEFL are mandatory.
As per DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), there has been a significant 15.1% rise in the number of Indian students in Germany compared to the previous year. During the Winter Semester of 2023-2024, Germany hosted a total of 49,483 Indian students. This growth highlights Germany’s increasing popularity among international students, particularly due to its affordable education, high-quality universities, and student-friendly policies. These factors have made Germany an attractive alternative to other study destinations like Canada.
“Indian student numbers in Germany continue to rise. The number has more than doubled in the last five years. Indian students now form the largest international community in Germany for the second year in a row,” Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) in its official notification said.
Enrollment statistics reveal a clear preference for Engineering, which comprises 60% of total enrolments. Law, Management, and Social Studies collectively attract 21% of students, while Mathematics and Natural Sciences account for 13%. The remaining 5% of students opt for various other academic fields.
Enrollment in higher education is divided between traditional universities and universities of applied sciences. Traditional universities attract 56% of students, focusing on academic and theoretical learning, while 44% prefer universities of applied sciences, which emphasize hands-on, practical training.
