PV wholesale dispatches move up after retail slowdown in November

NEW DELHI: Passenger vehicle wholesales rose 4% year-on-year in November while retail sales fell 14%, reflecting rising dealer stocks. While carmakers say inventory in the sales channel is healthy at about a month, dealers claim it is much higher at 65-68 days. Carmakers report wholesales or factory dispatches to dealerships every month, collated and reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) separately issues monthly vehicle registration data compiled from the Vahan portal of the ministry of road, transport & highways (MoRTH), which shows final sales to customers.

As many as 347,552 cars, sedans and utility vehicles were sold in the local market last month, a 4.1% increase from 333,833 units sold in the same period last year, showed data issued by Siam. Retail sales of passenger vehicles had, however, fallen by 14% on-year in November.

Passenger vehicle registrations had grown by a robust 33% during the festive month of October.

Rajesh Menon, director general, SIAM said, “The demand momentum which was seen in October during the festive period has continued in November for the industry as a whole, although two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments witnessed minor de-growth in November 2024.”

He noted that passenger vehicle sales in November was a record for the month. “The demand momentum which we saw during the festive period has continued in November. The marriage season has supported sales. SUVs especially are seeing good traction,” Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki told ET recently.Retail sales, as captured by the government’s Vahan portal based on vehicle registrations, were lower from November 2023, according to industry executives.

Diwali, when many Indians consider it auspicious to take delivery of new vehicles, was in November last year, driving retail sales. This year, however, all major festivals from Navratri to Dhanteras and Diwali were in October, they said.

Wholesales of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds fell by 1.1%, on a high base, to 1.6 million units last month. Three-wheeler sales fell by 1.3% to 59,350 units last month.

“Though Diwali festival did not fall in the month of November in 2024, the two-wheeler segment posted a sales of 1.605 million units, crossing the 1.6 million units mark for the first time in a non-Diwali November. However, there was a de-growth of (-)1.1% as compared to November of previous year for two-wheelers,” Menon said.
