Festive miniature railway ride in the UK has fairy-guided walks, woodland play parks and reindeer keeper meets

FOR a fun and unique way to celebrate the Christmas countdown, look no farther than Audley End Railway.

Nestled in ancient woodland near Saffron Walden, Essex, the miniature railway is the perfect destination for a festive family day out.

Our experience was a magical blend of nostalgia, twinkling lights and seasonal surprises amid a winter wonderland.

The journey began when a station master named Nutcracker warmly invited us aboard the Christmas Express – several miniature open carriages pulled by a teeny locomotive.

After we boarded our own four-person carriage, the mini train chugged deep into the forest, passing glittering lights and whimsical scenes, each more enchanting than the last.

My two wide-eyed kids, Anna and Adam, lit up with excitement when they spotted the elves and bustling activity as we pulled up to Santa’s winter workshop.

Mother Christmas and her team of elves had been hard at work, ensuring all toys would be built in time for Christmas Eve.

Then came the main event, an audience with Father Christmas, who spoke to each of the children and presented them with a gift ahead of December 25.

That wasn’t where the fun ended, though.

Back at the station, Holly the Christmas Fairy guided us towards the magical woodland walk.

Mulled wine in hand (for the parents), the leisurely stroll through an illuminated trail was an absolute delight.

Sparkling fairy lights adorned the trees, while big baubles dangled from the branches. Twinkling lanterns lit the path and tiny fairy houses, reindeer sculptures and a sleigh stationed along the trail provided plenty of photo opportunities.

There were so many hands-on activities, too.

Kids can meet reindeer keepers to learn about magical reindeer food – an essential treat to guide Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve.

Meanwhile, Cedar the postal elf ensured children had the opportunity to write their final wish-list to Father Christmas.

Snowberry the Frost Fairy’s stage show took place in her cosy tipi tent, while the wooden adventure play area was perfect for the kids to burn off steam.

Plan your magical visit carefully to make the most of the day, and consider eating beforehand.

Wonder and joy

While Audley End offers a good selection of food, including pizzas, burgers, jacket potatoes and waffles, these were sold out by the time we arrived at 5pm.

To avoid disappointment, consider bringing snacks or eating earlier in the day.

Other than that, the attention to detail, from the glistening lights to the thoughtfully prepared gifts, created a sense of wonder and joy that truly embodied the spirit of the season.

So, wrap up warm and hop on board.

It may not be the real life Polar Express, but it’s surely the next best thing.
