The film surpassed the record set by Murder, which had 20 kisses between Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat.
Kissing in Bollywood was quite common in the first half of the 20th century, with many films featuring kissing scenes between the lead actors. However the trend began to decline after country’s independence. For nearly, three decades, on-screen kisses were rare, appearing only occasionally. This changed in the early 200s with films like Murder, Jism, which revived the trend. Then came one film, that pushed all the boundaries.
Released in 2013, 3G, a horror thriller was directed by Sheershak Anand and Shantanu Ray Chibber. Starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sonal Chauhan in the lead roles, the film is often described as an erotic thriller. While 3G wasn’t a big hit, it gained significant attention due to its 30 on-screen kisses. The film was said to have surpassed the record set by Murder, which had 20 kisses between Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat.
The buzz around 3G ultimately did little to save it as the film was widely panned by critics and masses. With the lowest 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is regarded as one of the worst Indian films ever. Its IMDb score is similarly unimpressive at just 3.6.
At box office, the film was a disaster too. It earned only Rs 5.9 crore and failed to recover its production budget. Since its release, several films were close to rivaling 3G, but none surpassed it. In the same year, Parineeti Chopra and Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer Shuddh Desi Romance made waves with 27 kisses, while Befikre, featuring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor, had 25 kisses.
