This tiny film with no big stars has surpassed several re-releases and topped the ticket sales in India this year.
2024 has been the year of re-releases in Indian cinema. Over a dozen Hindi films as well as several Tamil and Telugu titles returned to theatres in recent months. Evergreen blockbusters like Hum Aapke Hain koun, Veer Zara, Jab We Met, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho, Zindagi Milegi Dobara and more has not just rekindled nostalgia but also delivered in significant box office earnings. Well, most of the re-releases have done well in terms of Box office. But, you will be surprised to know that most business was done by a niche horror film with no big stars.
Rahi Anil Barve’s Sohum Shah-starrer Tumbbad has surpassed several re-releases and topped the ticket sales in India this year. The 2017-released was made on a budget of Rs 5 crore, and earned Rs 15 crore at the box office. Upon re-release, it collected Rs 38 crore in total. In comparison, Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar earned Rs 10.50 crore, while Shah Rukh Khan’s Kal Ho Naa Hoo made Rs 2.50 crore, and Chiranjeevi’s cult classic grossed Rs 3.20 crore. It was only Vijay Ghili’s film that could came anywhere close, earning Rs 26 crore.
Moreover, six films were able to sold over a lakh tickets. Kal Ho Naa Ho, currently running in theatres, has sold over 1 lakh tickets, while Rockstar sold 3 lakh tickets. Well, Ghilli earned the second spot with over 4 lakh tickets but couldn’t beat Tummbad that had 10.25 lakh ticket sales upon re-release.
After being nominated under 8 categories, Tumbbad lifted 3 trophies at the 64th Filmfare Awards under Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Sound Design. The horror drama stars Sohum Shah Dhundiraj Prabhakar Jogalekar, Jyoti Malshe, Madhav Hari, Harsh K, Piyush Kaushik and Rudra Soni. Moreover, after re-release, the film has achieved massive success and has announced its sequel Tumbbad 2 in September.
