McDonald’s fans have been left seething after an employee detailed a subtle tweak to one of the fast food giant’s iconic sauces.
Kenya Humphries (@kenyaxo), who regularly shares snippets of her work and personal life on TikTok, took to the platform to share her thoughts on the change to the dip – stating the adaptation has elevated its flavour beyond its original “10 out of 10” rating.
Speaking in a video to her 111,000 followers, she announced: “McDonald’s have upgraded their sweet ‘n’ sour sauce, so let’s try it.” Brandishing a new pot next to an almost identical old version, Kenya noted that the recipe had been modified from “glucose fructose syrup to apricot pulp”.
She added: “I’ve been told that it [new sauce] tastes like a sweet and sour sauce from the chippy, but I’m here to give you my verdict.” Sampling four chicken nuggets, Kenya first tried the original sauce, exclaiming: “That for me is amazing. A 10 out of 10 – I don’t know how you would improve this.”
Yet, upon tasting the updated sauce, she was equally enthralled. “Oh my god, that is stunning,” she remarked following a bite. “It’s also a lot sweeter – it genuinely is like a chippy sweet and sour sauce.”
Kenya then showcased both sauces to highlight the colour difference, noting: “And the new one is a lot thinner, which actually makes it nicer.” She concluded: “I absolutely love it, but I reckon some of you might prefer the old one.”
Indeed, she was right as a multitude of her followers unleashed their disappointment in the comments, bemoaning the alteration. “I can’t believe they’ve changed it,” one devastated fan exclaimed. “This is my favourite dip! Don’t fix what’s not broken.”
Another TikTok user lamented: “Noooo hope it’s not changed too much. I LOVE the sweet and sour sauce.” A third commenter expressed their dismay: “No stop take it back, it’s disgusting and it used to be my favourite sauce and it’s ruined. Eww it’s not an upgrade, it’s a downgrade.”
Whilst a fourth critic agreed: “I hate the new one it’s too vinegary. I’m gutted it was my favourite the old recipe.”
Meanwhile, some users speculated that McDonald’s shift could be part of a push for healthier choices. “I don’t think they are trying to improve flavour, I think they are trying to get rid of nasty ingredients that are bad for you and replacing with better stuff for your health,” suggested a TikTok user.
A statement regarding McDonald’s strive towards healthier ingredients can be found on its web site, which reads in part: “In the UK, we have had a defined nutrition strategy in place for several years. Since 2018, we have made 100 changes to ingredients across our menu and invested heavily in broadening our menu of balanced options.”
