Controversial content creator Matthew Lani has revealed that he is staying in a shelter following his arrest last year for impersonating a medical doctor.
LANI SHARES HE IS NOW HOMELESS
In 2023, Matthew Lani made headlines after he was arrested for impersonating a medical doctor. As a result, he has since become homeless, losing both his apartment and his car.
In a TikTok video, he disclosed that he hasn’t been active lately on social media because he does not have a cellphone. He said that he is currently staying in a shelter with his mother.
“I’ve been in the shelter for four months now. It is challenging but it is better than being out on the street.”
“When I decided it was time for me and my mother to be in a shelter I just had to swallow my pride because going there has that stigma about it, but I had to humble myself and recognise the situation that I am in,” he said.
TIMES ARE TOUGH FOR LANI AS HE NOW DEPENDS ON THE R350 GRANT
Lani shared that he now depends on the R350 grant for a living.
“I don’t have a phone. I also have no source of income. It was better when I used to have a phone because I used to offer HIV patients counselling in exchange for money. Now I look forward to his R350 grant,” he said.
He also mentioned that his situation has affected his mother, who has become depressed as a result.
The content creator continues to assert that he acted appropriately and seeks to clear his name amidst evidence that he is not a doctor.
INSIDE HIS FALL FROM GRACE
Lani rose to fame in 2023 by claiming to be a doctor, donning medical scrubs, and was even seen filming at a hospital.
He provided medical advice on social media and sold weight loss pills, prompting public demands for an investigation into his credentials. The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Gauteng Health Department verified that he was not a qualified medical practitioner.
Wits University also refuted Lani’s claims that he graduated from the institution. Following his arrest, the charge of impersonating a medical doctor was dropped because there wasn’t enough evidence.
Despite this, he still seeks justice and is suing several parties for damaging his reputation and causing him to lose everything he had worked for.
