City of Cape Town to carry out 55-hour electricity upgrades in six suburbs

The City of Cape Town electricity generation and distribution department will conduct a 55-hour critical overhead infrastructure maintenance in six suburbs.

The maintenance work will take place from 22:00 on Friday, 1 November to 5:00 on Monday, 4 November, depending on weather conditions.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN TO CONDUCT CRITICAL ELECTRICITY MAINTENANCE

Initially, the maintenance work was scheduled to start on Friday, 25 November, but it was postponed due to inclement weather conditions.

The municipality said the critical overhead infrastructure supplies electricity to:

  • Grassy Park
  • Pelican Park
  • Muizenberg
  • Steenberg
  • Sun Valley
  • Clovelly

The City of Cape Town said emphasised that residents will have electricity supply while the work is being carried out. However, residents are advised that electricity supply interruptions may occur while the work is being done. Sometimes, tripping can occur, among other things.

Residents are also advised to check the municipality’s official communication channels, including the city’s social media channels, or contact the call centre for any updates on the upgrade work.

RESIDENTS NOT AFFECTED BY PREPAID ELECTRICITY METER UPGRADES

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town said its customers are not affected by the 24 November deadline to update prepaid electricity meters.

The municipality said all the approximately 570 000 City prepaid meters have been done.

“This software update programme is therefore coming to a close as far as City customers are concerned,” the municipality said.

To clarify, the City of Cape Town said there were/are two meter-related programmes:

  • The national software meter updates where when making a purchase, customers received long codes to update their own meter software to the Key Revision Number (KRN) 2.
  • The second meter-related programme is the City of Cape Town prepaid meter replacement programme – This programme is still underway and replaces old single and three-phase electricity credit meters and prepaid meters with new prepaid meters in City-supplied suburbs to ensure more accurate readings, greater usage control and cost management.
