Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz mocked Donald Trump on Thursday after the former president stumbled into a garbage truck.
On Wednesday, Trump climbed into a garbage truck after President Joe Biden called Trump supporters “garbage” before clarifying his remark. Even though Biden is not running for reelection, the ex-president – who has repeatedly said the U.S. is “like a garbage can” because of immigrants – seized on the remark and has been using it against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“How do you like my garbage truck?” he asked reporters while riding shotgun. “This truck is in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden.”
Speaking in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walz – the Minnesota governor – roasted Trump’s stunt while noting that the former president’s tariff plan will essentially act as a national sales tax:
He’s also talking about putting in a national sales tax on everything. Things to buy – clothes, food, toys, whatever you buy. Four thousand dollars a year that it adds to your family. Now look, this dude’s nearly 80 years old. He damned near killed himself getting into a garbage truck.
You would think, over 80 years, you would understand how a tariff works. Smarter people than Donald Trump, which is a good chunk of folks – CEOs of companies like Black & Decker, AutoZone, and Columbia have gone on the record to say if Donald Trump goes forward with this plan, they will simply have to raise prices and pass it on to you. Donald Trump’s saying China will pay for those tariffs the same way Mexico paid for the wall that he never built. It’s not gonna happen.
Trump has repeatedly spoken about tariffs as though they are paid by countries exporting goods to the U.S., but that is not the case. Tariffs are paid by the importing companies, which then raise prices to offset the cost. One conservative think tank estimated Trump’s tariff plan would cost U.S. consumers $4 trillion.
