Zola conceded that there is work still to be done in making the side a genuine title contender, but revealed that he saw a set system in place. The Chelsea legend also touched up on the pressure to claim silverware at the London club, but believes that Maresca has the calibre to lift trophies.

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola opined that new Blues’ boss Enzo Maresca is steering the London side in the right direction since his appointment at the helm at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea stands fourth in the Premier League table and the 44-year-old manager has done an immensely credible job, which compatriot Zola acknowledged.

Zola touched up on the pressure to claim silverware at the London club, but believes that Maresca has the calibre to lift trophies.

“He’s under pressure to win trophies,” Zola said breaking into a laugh.

“The times are different because in the past his predecessors had great teams. Maresca has a good team as well, a very good team but it’s very young and needs to develop.

Zola emphasised the intense competition in England but reiterated that Maresca has done exceptionally well since taking over.

“So far, he’s doing very well, and I really wish he can do that. He will have a tough task because of the competition in England, everybody knows it is so strong. But again, I like what he’s doing, and he’s got a chance.”

Chelsea have had to endure a tumultuous period since the takeover of the club by American Todd Boehly from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who oversaw an illustrious stint at the Stamford Bridge.

Zola conceded that there is work still to be done in making the side a genuine title contender, but revealed that he saw a set system in place.

“As a coach, I see something on the pitch. Now there is a lot of work to do because obviously the competition level is quite high,” Zola said.

“I see a structure in place. The team is working on something that is good. I like it,” he added.
