There have been many low-budget Bollywood films that have completely exceeded everyone expectations and earned massive at the box office. One that comes in list is Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani released in 2012. The female centric film also features Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles.
Helmed by Sujoy Gosh, Kahaani is centred around Vidya playing a pregnant woman who arrives in Kolkata during the Durga Puja festival to search for her missing husband. Everywhere Vidya inquires, no one can remember Arnab. There is no trace of him anywhere. However, still she won’t give up her search. She is assisted by crop Parambrata, while the intelligence officer Nawazuddin, doesn’t want to continue her search as her missing husband links to a mysterious escaper Milind Damji.
Vidya Balan’s performance in Kahaani remains one of the best in the last decade. The actor won three national awards for the film, and director Sujoy Ghosh was praised for his masterful direction.
Made in just Rs 8 crore budget, the 2012 release suspense-thriller grossed Rs 104 crore worldwide. Kahaani even ran more than 50 days in the theatre and is still considered one of the best films in the Indian cinema.
Kahaani even had a sequel Kahaani 2: Durga Rani which starred Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal. Released in 2016, the film failed to match the success of original. Moreover, Kahaani had a spin-off titled Bob Biswas, that featured Abhishek Bachchan in lead role. It was directly released on ZEE5 in 2021.
