The series delves into the intricacies of relationships, exploring themes of ambition, loyalty, and the often-humorous lengths one might go to in pursuit of love. As Hae-yeong seeks a temporary solution to her mounting pressures, her outlandish proposal to Ji-uk adds a delightful twist to the narrative. Kim Young-dae, known for his previous roles in The Forbidden Marriage and Shooting Stars, brings a relatable charm to Ji-uk, a model citizen working night shifts at a convenience store. His character’s willingness to step into this unconventional arrangement not only highlights his altruistic nature but also sets the stage for a comedic and heartwarming journey of self-discovery and unexpected romance.

Complementing this dynamic duo were Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun, as the second leads who went on to get their spin-off Spice Up Our Love. Lee plays Bok Gyu-hyun, a third-generation chaebol and CEO at Hae-yeong’s company, while Han portrays Nam Ja-yeon, a popular web novelist and Hae-yeong’s close friend.

Directed by Kim Jung-sik, known for his work on Strong Girl Nam Soon and Work Later, Drink Now, and penned by Kim Hye-young of Her Private Life fame, No Gain No Love blended humour with heartfelt moments, all while tackling relatable issues of modern life. The series provided a fresh take on the romantic comedy genre, ensuring that viewers will not only laugh but also reflect on the importance of love and connection amidst life’s challenges.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, actor Kim Young-dae expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside an industry veteran like Shin Min-a, noting how her experience greatly influenced their performances. As he stepped into the shoes of Kim Ji-uk, a compassionate and idealistic character, Young-dae reflected on the appeal of portraying someone who embodies calmness and rationality, providing a contrast to his co-star Shin Min-a’s character, Son Hae-yeong.

Excerpts from Bollywood Hungama interview with Shin Min-a:

Q. What attracted you to the character of Kim Ji-uk? How did you relate to his idealistic and compassionate nature? How did you approach portraying Ji-uk’s contrasting perspective on life compared to Hae-yeong’s?

Kim Young-dae: I was attracted to his calm and rational personality. I also felt that I could express a different feeling from how he does selfless acts at his own expense compared to Hae-yeong.

Q. What was it like working with Shin Min-a, who is an industry veteran with a catalogue of amazing filmography? Did you find it exciting to establish this unique annoyance-to-love sort of relationship with her character Hae-yeong, given the unique circumstances of their fake marriage?

Kim Young-dae: It was such an honour and I learned a lot. I received a lot of help in acting, too. She led the relationship between Hae-yeong and Ji-uk so it could be more real.

Q. What excites you about the unique blend of romance and comedy in No Gain No Love? And what according to you set it apart from rom-coms?

Kim Young-dae: The realistic dialogue and the relationship between the characters were very interesting and there were many things I could relate to.

Q. You get to play with a lot of humour elements on the show. Can you share a behind-the-scenes anecdote or funny story from the set?

Kim Young-dae: I filmed the Busan date scenes without even realizing we were filming and that was shown in the episode, so it was even more fun.

Q. Reuniting with Han Ji-hyun after The Penthouse must have been an exciting experience. How did your existing friendship influence your on-screen dynamic, though you two have limited screen time?

Kim Young-dae: I was able to rely on her and I gained strength because it felt like I met a family member.

Q. Kim Ji-uk and Lee Sang-yi’s Bok Gyu-hyun have a unique relationship. What was it like building that camaraderie with him?

Kim Young-dae: I have a close relationship with Lee Sang-yi, who played the role of Bok Gyu-hyun, and received a lot of help when acting! He is a senior whom I personally rely on and respect.

Q. Another beloved rom-com of yours, Shooting Stars, resonated with fans. With No Gain No Love also receiving so much love, are there any shows you particularly enjoy and often rewatch?

Kim Young-dae: I like Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.

Q. Before the show premiered, a spin-off titled Spice Up Our Love was announced, highlighting the creators’ confidence in its success and the audience’s love for the characters. How excited are you for your co-stars, Han Ji-hyun and Lee Sang-yi, as they step into lead roles in this spin-off?

Kim Young-dae: I had high expectations since the spin-off was confirmed because it is an extension of No Gain No Love. As soon as it was launched, I enjoyed watching it as a viewer.

Q. Korean dramas are so popular and you have a huge following in India. Have you ever watched any Indian content? If so, any movie or actor’s work that you’ve loved?

Kim Young-dae: I like 3 Idiots.

Q. What’s next for you in terms of dramas? Any particular genre you want to explore? Have you signed any projects yet?

Kim Young-dae: The melo-thriller Dear X drama has been confirmed and we are working hard on it
