Skincare expert warns popular autumn treat can ‘contribute to ageing’ and fine lines

Considering how these delicious treats might affect our skin and overall wellbeingis important.

With the rise of trendy beverages, understanding their potential impact on our complexion is essential to deciding how much to consume.

That can be the case for the famous Pumpkin Spice Latte, commonly known as PSL, which has become an autumnal staple and won the hearts of many with its cosy aroma.

Hayley Walker, a skincare expert at Justmylook, has spoken to Express.co.uk to explain how the overconsumption of PSL can be connected to a loss of youthfulness.

She said: “The effects of pumpkin spice lattes can contribute to ageing in various ways.

“First, the increased cortisol levels caused by the caffeine hit can lead to an ageing complexion, as skin inflammation triggered by the stress hormone can result in fine lines and wrinkles.

“Cortisol also impacts collagen and elastin production, with this skin protein reduction leading to wrinkles, sagging, and loss of hydration and plumpness.

“The sugar spike from the seasonal drink can also accelerate signs of ageing, hindering a youthful complexion.”

To counteract these ageing effects, the specialist suggested limiting PSL consumption and lowering cortisol levels.

Cortisol levels can be reduced through a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress-relieving supplements like Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids.

She also recommended incorporating ingredients with anti-inflammatory benefits into the autumn skincare routine.

The skincare pro said: “Opting for skin-brightening and hydrating ingredients, such as Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Glycerin, can provide a nourishing moisture boost and rejuvenate the skin for a radiant complexion.”

Niacinamide and Ceramide are two ingredients that can help diminish redness and irritation, strengthen the skin barrier, and retain moisture for a more youthful appearance.
