Ratan Tata passes away due to illness

Mumbai: Ratan Tata, one of the iconic leaders of Corporate India who led the country’s largest conglomerate, the Tata group, for over 30 years, passed away on Wednesday evening due to age-related illnesses. He was 86. Tata was admitted to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai a few days ago.

Ratan Tata, who would be remembered for his audacious bets in businesses that created a global footprint for the group, philanthropic zeal, and strong convictions, was the only person to head the parent company Tata Sons as well as the Tata Trusts which controlled the unlistedholding firm.

‘A Truly Uncommon Leader’
In a statement issued to the media, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said: “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation. For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend.”

On Monday, a Tata Trusts release had said that Ratan Tata was undergoing routine medical investigations. In a tribute to Ratan N Tata, emphasizing his legacy, vision, and continued influence even after his passing, Tata Trusts said, “While he is no longer physically among us, his spirit and values live on. His extraordinary kindness, sense of purpose, and dedication to the vision of the Founders, which created India’s celebration of values and strives for the welfare of all.

A strong custodian of the Tata brand, Ratan Tata turned the group into one of the world’s biggest conglomerates with a revenue of $165 billion in 2023-24. A joint statement by issued by family members Simone Tata, Jimmy Tata, Noel Tata , Aloo Tata said, “It with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Ratan,” members of the Tata family said.

“We, his brothers, sisters, and family, take solace and comfort in the outpouring of love and respect from all who admired him. While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity, and purpose will continue to inspire future generations. During this time of grief, we request privacy as we come together to honor his memory,” they said.
