Mamata Banerjee: Kultuli rape-murder case: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee calls for capital punishment, urges to stop media trials

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday urged the police to register the recent Kultuli rape-murder case under POCSO Act. She added that the culprits should be given capital punishment within three months. She also said that media trials in rape cases must stop as it could hamper investigations.

The chief minister said crime has no colour, caste or religion while was speaking at the Kolkata Police Body Guard Lines after virtually inaugurating several Durga Pujas.

“I want the police to register the Kultuli case under the POCSO Act and ensure that the culprits get capital punishment within three months… Crime is crime; there is no religion or caste. Strong action should be taken against the criminals,” Banerjee said.

The statements come after a ten-year-old was allegedly raped and murdered in South 24 Parganas disrict’s Joynagar months after the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case.

The West Bengal government moved Calcutta High Court on Sunday following demands made by the minor rape and murder victim’s father, seeking post-mortem in a central government hospital in the presence of the judicial magistrate.
