How to store vegetables so they last three weeks every time

It feels like you get to the middle of the week, you’re ready to cook up a storm, but you open the fridge and the vegetables you intended to use look like they went off a while ago.

It’s a situation mimicked in many UK kitchens, but how are you supposed to correctly store vegetables to make them last longer?

Content creator @plantyou has the answer, as she shared ways to make your vegetables last “at least three times longer”.

She said for fresh herbs, you should “store them like a bouquet in a small jar of water”.

You should also “submerge those heartier vegetables like carrots and celery in water to keep them nice and fresh”.

When it comes to storing leafy greens for longer, you need to “remove as much water as possible to keep them fresh”.

She recommended using “something like a salad spinner to remove moisture and store in a sealed container with a dry cloth”.

In the comments, some asked how long carrots would last being stored like that.

One woman wrote: “Approximately three weeks. Cut the tops off when doing this. And make sure to change water and rinse carrots”.

Another recommended people “Invest in plastic containers. Perfect for veggies and fruits”.

Others asked her for fruit tips – as they found the same thing happened with their fresh fruits including berries.

Someone had tried it, and added: “I did this with green onions like an inch of water changed water every few days. No joke they lasted three weeks and still crisp”.

A social media user explained how you can use the leftover water too, rather than throwing it down the drain.

She said: “Just saying – the water from the carrots or celery, instead of dumping, water your plants with it”.

Have you tried these vegetable storing tips? How did it go for you?
