Very few people are aware that Hema Malini’s parents were against her being involved with the Sholay star because, at the time, he was already married to Prakash Kaur. Her mother Jaya Chakravathy attempted to persuade her to marry actor Jeetendra, as per Hema’s autobiography ‘Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl.’

Hema Malini was rumoured to have captivated Dharmendra’s heart to such an extent that he was willing to put anything, even his current marriage, in their way. They opted to go a different way because his first wife wouldn’t consent to a divorce. When they decided to get married, Dharmendra took on the name Dilawar Khan and Hema changed it to Aisha Bi, a decision that had everyone talking. To commemorate Hema Malini’s heritage, they later had an Iyengar-style wedding in addition to a private Nikah ceremony in 1980.
Bollywood’s Dream Girl has recently talked openly about her equation with her husband and the reasons she lives apart from him. Speaking to Lehren, she said, “Nobody wants to be like that, it happens. Automatically, what happens, you have to accept. Otherwise, nobody will feel like they want to live their life like this. No! Every woman wants to have a husband, and children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way.”
