Watch:
According to EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, no injuries were reported.
“On arrival at Johannesburg Country Club, firefighter crews found the building gutted with flames,” he said.
“Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and, fortunately, everyone managed to evacuate when the fire started. The fire has been contained in the kitchen, dining hall, and reception area.”
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
A legacy up in flames
The JCC in Auckland Park is a registered heritage site, and was established in 1906. It boasts 14 hectares of manicured gardens, along with a full range of sporting facilities, restaurants, bars and boutique accommodation.
This makes JCC Auckland Park a sought-after venue for business functions, weddings and for family gatherings.
“Extensive sports facilities include state of the art padel courts, cricket pitch, tennis and squash courts, bowling greens, croquet, a new gym, swimming pool and mountain bike/running trail,” states the JCC’s website.
Western Cape braces for an exceptionally tough fire season
In related news, the heavy rainfall in the Western Cape this winter indicates that the province is likely to face a severe wildfire season. Local government has allocated funds in anticipation of this.
According to a South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster, rainfall is a vital factor in determining the risk of wildfires. It leads to thicker vegetation, while climate experts are also expecting extremely high temperatures during the upcoming summer.
