Orlando Pirates star made wrong move

Orlando Pirates have a brand new right-back from Stellenbosch FCDeano Van Rooyen. Benedict Vilakazi is not so sure about the deal.

ORLANDO PIRATES ANNOUNCE DEANO VAN ROOYEN

Following the injuries on Thabiso Lebitso and Bandile Shandu, Van Rooyen has arrived at the Sea Robbers to compete with Thabiso Monyane for the number two position.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club Is pleased to announce the signing of Deano van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC. The 27-year-old has signed a three year contract with the Buccaneers, which includes an additional two-year option,” the club said.

“Van Rooyen who joined Stellenbosch FC as a teenager, made his senior debut in 2016 featuring as a substitute at 19 years old. He would go on to help the Maroons gain promotion to the Premiership three years later.

“He went to become a prominent figure for the club, averaging an impressive 27 league matches per season (since 2019). Die Hond as he is affectionately known, a name that underpins his never say die spirit, has served his former club with flying colours – registering over 150 appearances in all competitions,” Orlando Pirates concluded.

MOVE QUESTIONED

“The problem that I’m seeing with teams in South Africa is lack of planning and planning is a very crucial part,” Tso said on iDiski TV.

“Right now, you are signing Deano [but] he didn’t even have pre-season with the team. What are we saying with his shape, his understanding with the team? So, you are going to put him in the team in the league and he doesn’t understand the guys in terms of how they play.

“I love Pirates a lot, but my thinking is that it was going to be better if he went to [Kaizer] Chiefs. There is [Thabiso] Monyane at Pirates who I think is doing very well and this boy [Thabiso] Lebitso. I mean Lebitso alone, no one comes close to him not even Monyane.

“Deano is good in defending; he is good going forward but is he good in delivery when it comes to that bar line where he needs to give a quality cross?

“These are some of the things I check but having Lebitso and Monyane, Monyane is still young he will learn from Lebitso. You don’t have to get another player. That will kill his confidence because for me when you bring Deano obviously when Deano is not playing it’s going to be Lebitso. So where is Monyane going to go?” the former Orlando Pirates captain concluded.
