TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy’s fresh post of an RK Laxman cartoon sparked controversy amid the Kolkata rape and murder case
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy who has recently been taking stands different from his party line amid the Kolkata rape and murder case, has now posted a cartoon by RK Laxman on ‘X’ triggering a fresh political storm.
The cartoon dated December 26, 1962 is a political satire in which the police is seen arresting a person. “Of course you were’nt spreading rumours- the charge is you were spreading facts!” the caption below read. The TMC leader also added a ‘smiley’ emoji along with the cartoon.
Earlier last week, Roy, in a social media post, had demanded that Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and RG Kar Medical College former principal Sandeep Ghosh should be taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation for questioning. Following this, Roy was summoned by the Calcutta police at police headquarters, Lalbazar.
Later, Roy came to the attention of the High Court over his post. The court asked him to delete it, to which he obliged.
Earlier, Roy had expressed his support to the women-led Reclaim The Night protest in Kolkata, in which hundreds participated to demand justice for the young doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month. The TMC MP had also participated at a sit-in at Kolkata’s Jodhpur Park, demanding justice over this incident.
The cartoon posted by Roy has been used on various occasions. It was shared extensively in the context of the farmers’ movement in recent times.
