Ananya Panday, Karan Johar, Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, Vihaan Samat, Mini Mathur, Lisa Mishra, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Somen Mishra and Nikhil Madhok of Amazon Prime Video attended the trailer launch of the entertaining show Call Me Bae. Karan Johar gave a memorable quote when he drew parallels between Ananya Panday’s character and Poo, the iconic character from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) played by Kareena Kapoor Khan.
Call Me Bae: Karan Johar says that Ananya Panday’s character is Poo 2.0: “If Rohan Raichand and Poo had to have a baby girl, she would be Bae”
The host asked if Bae joins the league of characters like Rahul and Anjali (from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham), Poo and Rocky (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani), KJo remarked, “I would say that it’s been 23 years to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. I think if Rohan Raichand (Hrithik Roshan) and Pooja Raichand had to have a baby girl, she would be Bae (smiles)!” He also clarified, “I am not referencing anyone’s age at this moment (laughs)!”
Karan Johar continued, “Bae is a really cool, Gen Z, 2.0 derivative of Poo. Where Poo ends, Bae takes off. That’s the best way I can describe it. Even when you saw the character of Poo, it started with all the fun and games. Then she contributes to the emotional gravitas of the goings-on in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Similarly, when it comes to this show, while you may have an outer perspective that it’s fun, cool, hip and fashionable, but it’s still saying a lot. I’ll give full credit to Ishita Moitra, the creator of the show, along with her glorious team.”
Ananya Panday added to this aspect, “Call Me Bae is an amalgamation of all the chick flick movies that I loved growing up. There’s of course also Poo. I literally dressed up as Poo two years ago. Even at 23, I am dressing up like her. I have all her quotes on my mirror. She has really left an impression on me. It’s a mix of Schitt’s Creek, Clueless, Aisha, Nancy Drew and many such fun films and shows that we are not really getting to watch right now. It’s a show that I’d like to watch. It’s very light, happy and fun. Even though Bae has a bit of all these characters, she’s fully her own person. She’s all heart and I hope people love her as much as I did.”
Call Me Bae releases on Amazon Prime Video on September 6.
