A city that’s virtually tourist-free has been hailed as one of Europe’s top places to live, following glowing reviews from its residents.
In a comprehensive report released recently by the European Commission, the Polish city of Białystok was jointly ranked first for having the highest percentage of inhabitants who felt their quality of life had improved.
The study covered most European countries, and Białystok outperformed many renowned cities such as Rome, London, and Berlin.
Białystok, situated near the Belarus border but far from any conflict, is a hub of Polish multiculturalism.
Over the years, Tatars, Belarusians, Roma, and Jews have all left their cultural mark on the city, resulting in a wonderfully diverse architectural landscape.
The city boasts beautiful wooden houses nestled among numerous Orthodox churches, and it is also home to Poland’s only Tatar villages.
Additionally, the UNESCO-protected Biaowieza Forest, one of the last remnants of the vast primaeval forest that once blanketed the great European Plain, is nearby.
With a population of 290,000, Białystok is Poland’s 10th largest settlement. A significant proportion of its residents are over 50 and primarily speak Polish.
However, the younger generation is generally fluent in English.
Food is a major passion here, with everyone encouraged to try Kartacze – a potato dumpling filled with minced meat.
Zurek, a sour rye soup, is a traditional national dish, while those with a sweet tooth should sample Makowiec – a traditional poppy seed roll often containing honey and raisins.
The locals frequently visit the red-brick Catholic Church – Basilica Cathedral – over the weekend. The stunning structure is breathtaking from all angles.
The city is also adorned with beautiful murals, including a famous one depicting a young girl girl watering a plant, and another of a Polish grandmother named Eugenia.
For those looking to stay, the Podlasie Youth Hostel is a good option for a budget visit.
For a budget hotel, consider staying in the Branicki Boutique Rooms, while those seeking an apartment could do worse than the Nowy Swiat Leza complex.
