However, owning a CNG car comes with specific maintenance requirements. CNG is highly flammable and even a small leak from the CNG cylinder or fuel line can result in serious accidents. Therefore, maintaining CNG cars is crucial.
Here are some essential tips to keep your CNG car running smoothly.
Park in shade
Parking your CNG car in a shaded area or garage is crucial. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as the scorching heat can affect the CNG tank’s lifespan and raise the cabin temperature, leading to gas evaporation.
Check and replace spark plugs
Spark plugs are vital for the combustion process in your car’s engine. Checking them regularly and replacing them when needed is an important step in maintaining your CNG car. When choosing spark plugs for your vehicle, you should always go for a high-quality, CNG-compatible, fitted CNG spark plug and get it replaced every 10,000 km or six months.
Clean the throttle body regularly
The throttle body connects the air filter to the intake manifold. A dirty throttle body can impact engine performance. Clean it regularly to maintain smooth air intake during combustion. Signs of a dirty throttle body include poor fuel economy, sluggish acceleration, rough idling, and bumpy stalling. Use a cleaner or water spray to remove dirt and debris.
Inspect your CNG tank
Regular inspection of the CNG tank by an authorised service facility is mandatory for safety. Check for damages, corrosion, and cracking and ensure valves are not worn out. Always verify the tank’s expiry date and replace it as needed.
Renew your Compliance Plate
A valid compliance plate is a legal and safety requirement. Periodically get your CNG car tested by a government-certified agency, which will issue a test certificate and a new CNG Compliance Plate to avoid penalties and ensure safety.
