It was very tight as the riders charged towards the finish line and Carlin made a break as he looked to land a bronze.

However, he was cruelly wiped out as two other riders collided ahea dof him.

Japan’s Shinji Nakano and Malaysian rider Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom collided with each other and there was no chance of Carlin avoiding the unfolding carnage in front of him.

The Paisley-born cyclist’s skin suit was ripped and medical personnel rushed on to help him.

Thankfully, Carlin was able to get up and walk away after turning down the offer of a neck brace.

The collision did, however, dash Carlin’s hopes of securing another Olympic medal.

The Scot scooped silver as part of the men’s team sprint team and also took bronze in the individual sprint event.
