Kamal Haasan and filmmaker S Shankar reunited for the vigilante social drama Indian 2 after almost 18 years and the film had several high expectations riding over it after the success of the first installment in 1996. However, the movie failed to meet expectations with the film facing several challenges at the box office. And now, even before completing one month of its release, streaming giant Netflix has announced its premiere on August 9.

For the unversed, Indian 2 released in cinemas on July 12 after a grand launch was hosted by the entire team in Chennai. Speaking of its digital premiere, Netflix India South took to the social media platform X, aka Twitter, to share the news along with a quote in Tamil that said, “Thatha varaaru, kadhara vida poraaru (Loose Translation: Grandfather is coming, he is going to make you cry)”. Furthermore, the note also revealed about the film releasing in multiple languages on the platform and added, “#Indian2 is coming to Netflix on 9 August in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada!” However, there has been no update about the digital release of the Hindi version, which is titled Hindustani 2. (the original Hindustani title used in 1996 was retained in this one as well).

Speaking about the film, Kamal Haasan returns to the role of freedom fighter-turned-vigilante as he returns to the country to fight yet another war against corruption which is kick started by his ardent admirer and a young lad named Chitra Aravindhan, played by Siddharth. In this sequel to the 1996 entertainer, an absconded Senapathy, who is a wanted man in India, returns to the country from abroad after over two decades to aid a group in dealing with extensive corruption that has led to the death of many.
Along with Haasan and Siddharth, Indian 2 features Rakul Preet Singh as the leading lady, along with S. J. Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha, Vivek, Nedumudi Venu, Kalidas Jayaram, Samuthirakani, and Jagan in key roles with Kajal Aggarwal in a special cameo.
