SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE PROBING LEOPARD ATTACK

Following the incident, the Air Force said it was collaborating with wildlife experts and local authorities to assess the situation and implement appropriate measures to mitigate future risks.

“While we understand the concerns raised by this situation, we encourage all personnel to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols when engaging with the natural wildlife in the area,” SAAF said.

In addition, the Air Force said Acting Officer Commanding AFB Hoedspruit, Colonel Enrico Gherbavaz, has since mobilised the base environmental team to mitigate further risks.

Immediate measures include summoning the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) to trace and monitor the leopard and contacting the Limpopo Department of Economic Development Environment and Tourism (LEDET) and other stakeholders to arrange for the leopard’s safe removal.

“Additionally, communications have been sent out to residents urging vigilance and avoiding solitary outdoor activities.”

The Air Force is also working with Ingwe Leopard Research and wildlife veterinarians to relocate the leopard safely.

In June, the South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed that three individuals were injured following a hippo attack close to the Kruger National Park’s Paul Kruger Gate.

The incident involved a team from the Biodiversity Social Project, part of the Working for Water Programme and based at Kruger Park.

SANParks said the team was clearing alien plants along the Sabie River when the hippo charged at them in the thick bush near the riverbank.

The group was accompanied by two armed field guards who fired shots at the animal. The hippo fled back to the river.
