Android users shifting to iPhone sees a record jump in years: CIRP report

The discussion of Android vs iOS is never-ending, the debate is always on with both sides of the spectrum having a fair share of ups and downs. However, all these don’t really matter to a general consumer. To suggest the same, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has published a new report which shows Apple is leading the race, at least with regard to shipments. Check out the details.

Apple beating Google in the OS game

  • Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) published a new report, which suggests that 17 percent of iPhone buyers in Q2 2024 were previously Android users.
  • Why this means a big deal is that this is the highest percentage that CIRP has seen in the second quarter over the past five years.

  • For context, Q2 2023 saw only 10 percent of iPhone buyers were previously using Android phones and this apparently was the lowest percentage in a very long time.
  • This significant jump makes it quite a remarkable achievement for Apple.
  • It should be noted that Apple doesn’t launch new iPhones in the second quarter of the year, which is what makes the chart quite significant.
  • This means that Android users are shifting to Apple right in the middle part of the year despite the models being at least two-quarters old by then.

The reasons behind the jump could be different and will be very hard to point out but they may not be simply interested in what the Android side of the spectrum has to offer. This jump is despite being slow in incorporating new tech-like faster charging speeds, a faster 120Hz display, a telephoto sensor and others-on its standard models.

Even in price-sensitive markets like India, people usually prefer iPhones over Android flagships, more so during sales even if they are over a year old. Apple India’s annual sales hit about $8 billion in March this year compared to $6 billion last year, a 33 percent growth. This suggests that the reception of iPhones is growing more so than ever in the country.

Whatever the reason, Google needs to make amends if it intends to be the global leader with its Android operating system. It still has a chance considering a previous report from CIRP showed that overall fewer Android users jumped to iOS in 2023 when compared to 2022.
