‘I’m in politics for power’ [video]

Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is making headlines after he revealed that he is into politics for power. The Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture stressed that there is nothing wrong with parties that joined the Government of National Unity (GNU) for positions of power.

The minister made the remarks shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Opening of Parliament Address in Cape Town on 18 July.

PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE LEADER GAYTON MCKENZIE: ‘I’M IN POLITICS FOR POWER’

The African National Congress Party tabled a GNU after failing to win an outright majority in this year’s elections. The GNU has since received praise, while other political parties have taken a swipe at the new government.

Despite several political parties in the GNU making it known that they were not in the government for influential positions, McKenzie is seemingly singing from a different hymnal.

Minister Gayton McKenzie said his party intends to impact society significantly, which can only be achieved by holding influential government positions. He said these influential positions would help his party accomplish this goal.

Gayton McKenzie told Eyewitness News, “I’m in politics for power. You are too used to politicians [who] lie to you. I’m in politics for power, make no mistake. I’m here for power, unashamedly – that’s why I’m here.”

The now-viral clip has undoubtedly gained thousands of comments and reactions since it dropped on X, formerly Twitter. Mzansi was quick to flood social media with their two cents.

MAKING HEADLINES

Since his appointment, he has been making headlines with his hands-on approach and transparency. A week ago, Minister Gayton McKenzie released a list of athletes and artists who had received relief funds from the department.

The ministry made public a list of over 3 000 beneficiaries who received R72 million from the department during the COVID-19 restrictions.

However, against the backlash, the former convict who served time for armed robbery said that everyone receiving funds would be revealed to the public since it’s public money.

Apart from relief funds, Minister Gayton McKenzie also announced that superfans won’t be receiving any special government treatment. He said superfans must make plans to attend trips since the government won’t fund them.

While speaking to Radio 702, journalist Gayton McKenzie reiterated that superfans must make super plans to fund their international trips. He said, “Not under my watch, no. If you are a super fan, you must make a super plan to get yourself there.”
