‘Johnson heard about sacking just before statement’

This week, Kaizer Chiefs announced the parting of ways with Cavin Johnson, ahead of the next season.

Johnson initially joined Chiefs as their Head of Youth Development, before later being roped in as interim coach.

After joining in his initial post in September, Johnson saw himself being thrust into a first team role soon after. This was after Chiefs had parted ways with head coach Molefi Ntseki due to a string of poor results. Part of those results was the first round Carling Knockout Cup loss to AmaZulu which proved to be the final drawer. He had also endured some fan abuse, with objects thrown at him in stadiums. Up stepped Johnson, who the management were hoping would come in and steady the ship.

Johnson roped in after Ntseki sacking

In the end, things went from bad to worse instead, under Johnson. He led the club to its most losses in a year and also the lowest league finish in their history, 10th! That feat had Chiefs fans baying for blood and wanting the experienced campaigner removed from the club completely. This even after the club confirmed he would be not get the head coach role.

That then led to the Chiefs decision to part ways with Johnson earlier this week. That went against an earlier report that seemed to suggest he would stay on. Now according to KickOff.com even the veteran himself was expecting to stay and was shocked by the decision.

Found about Chiefs sacking almost in real time!

“The coach was told shortly before they released a statement that he is not going to be retained, it is almost like he found out at the same time as everybody else. He just feels that the incoming coaches, because he was in charge of the senior team, don’t want him around the club, as they could see him as a threat. But that is just his opinion.” Said the source to the publication.

It is further stated that Chiefs will now pay Johnson a settlement.
