In a recent episode of Arbaaz Khan’s show, veteran actress Shabana Azmi opened up about the professional parting of ways between her husband, Javed Akhtar, and his writing partner Salim Khan. Known as Salim-Javed, this legendary writing duo was celebrated for their screenplays. The collaboration discontinued in 1982 when Akhtar branched out to penning lyrics. Read on to find more details.
Shabana Azim in an interaction with Arbaaz opened up, “Till today, I do not know why Salim-Javed split up. I thought it was a personal decision I shouldn’t get involved in it (sic).” The powerful partnership that gave us blockbuster hits like Sholay, Zanjeer, Deewar, and Don had unfortunately dissolved in 1982. Shabana remained unsure about what factors led to their shocking split.
During the show, she opened up about Javed Akhtar’s struggle with alcoholism and emotionally connected with his former wife, Honey Irani, as well as with their children, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar.
Previously this year, Javed Akhtar shared his take on the split during a chat with Mojo Story. He said, “When we began, both of us were nobodies, we only had each other. So, we would spend a lot of time together, sit by the sea, talk about stories. He would come to my room, I had one paying guest room, or I would go to his house, which was a small one. But when you become bigger, more successful, many more people enter your life. Then all those desires which were dormant, all those interests which were dormant… The moment you have done something which was the main issue of your life or the main interest, you reach a satisfactory position and then all the other interests start emerging (sic).” He observed that their evolving social circles and differing interests caused a gradual separation, impacting their professional collaboration over time.
