‘Easy’ air fryer sausage rolls cook in under an hour

British summertime is upon us and what better way to enjoy the nice weather than with a picnic? If you’re a fan of sausage rolls and think no picnic is complete without them, why not swap shop-bought pastries for your own homemade sausage rolls?

BBC Good Food has shared a surprisingly straightforward recipe which you can try at home. To top it off, the recipe can be made using your air fryer.

They describe the recipe as “easy, taking just 20 minutes to prep and cooking in 30 minutes. BBC Good Food said: “Make sausage rolls flavoured with apple and sage in the air fryer.

“If you’ve got a larger machine or a couple of drawers, feel free to double the recipe.”

Ingredients

  • Six pork sausages
  • 10 sage leaves, finely sliced
  • Two tablespoons of apple sauce
  • 320g pack of ready-rolled puff pastry
  • plain flour for dusting
  • One egg, beaten
  • Two tablespoons of nigella seeds (optional)

Method

Step one: Squeeze the sausage meat out of the skins into a bowl, then stir through the sage, apple sauce and a good pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set your mixture to one side.

Step two: Unroll the pastry and peel away the parchment paper. Flour a surface and lay the pastry down. Shape the sausage meat into a log across the centre of the pastry. Ensure the sausage is approximately four to five sentiments in thickness. It should also reach both ends of the pastry.

Step three: Brush the egg over the longer edges of the pastry. Next, carefully fold one side over to the other so the sausage is encased. Make sure there is a lip of pastry on one side.

Trim the excess pastry and cut it into six to eight pieces. Using a knife or fork, press down on the edge to crimp. Glaze the pastry all over with the egg. At this stage, you can sprinkle over some nigella seeds if you like, though this is optional.

Step four: Heat the air fryer to 200C and pop your sausage rolls in. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until the pastry is cooked and golden.

Make sure the sausage meat is cooked through. As air fryers vary, the BBC Good Food experts recommend checking on your sausage rolls halfway through. Store your sausage rolls in the fridge and they will keep for three days.
