EasyJet to launch brand new island route from UK airport

EasyJet is set to launch a brand new island route from a UK airport.

The carrier is set to fly from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport to Malta from December.

The flights, available on Tuesdays and Sundays, will also be available to book through easyJet holidays.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport Aviation Director Paul Winfield said: “With just 9% of all flights to Malta from the north-west currently
served from Liverpool, this route has significant opportunity to grow from here.”

JLA, recently named ‘UK’s best airport’ by Which, has experienced a surge in passenger numbers over the past year.

Around 4.2million passengers flew out of JLA last year, and the airport is set to return to pre-Covid levels by the end of the year.

Easyjet recently confirmed it suffered an £80million hit from the conflict in Gaza and growing tension across the Middle East.

The low-budget airline axed flights to Israel and Jordan following the Hamas terror attack on October 7.

It said that £40million had been lost on cancellations as a result of the move.

And the carrier revealed that it was also down £40million due to lost bookings in the region as passengers avoid going to other destinations including Egypt.

Carriers offer new routes

Jet2 is set to launch six new flights from Birmingham Airport.

The new routes include Chambery, Geneva, Grenoble, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Turin.

Holidaymakers will have access to the French, Austrian, Swiss and Italian Alps, and the Tyrolean Mountains.

All new added countries will be available for the 2025/26 season – with Jet2 announcing them early so holidaymakers can beat the rush.

Last month, easyJet announced the opening of its first new UK base in over a decade.

The budget airline, which already has eight bases around the UK, will operate 16 new routes from its brand-new base at Birmingham Airport.

From Birmingham Airport, easyJet will fly to Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

Other new routes are set to include Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey, as well as other destinations in Greece like Rhodes, Kos, Heraklion and Corfu.

EasyJet will also operate flights from Birmingham Airport to Berlin, Sharm El Sheikh, Larnaca Intl and Jersey.

It has since reintroduced Tel Aviv flights — but suspended them again until October after Iran’s missile and drone attack on Israel last weekend.

Jet2 launches six new flights from major UK airport

It comes as the company said it expects to cut its half-year losses from last year.

EasyJet Boss Johan Lundgren said: “We are well set up operationally for this summer season where we expect easyJet to be one of the fastest growing major airlines in Europe and take more customers on easyJet holidays than ever before.”
