About Maharaj

Set in the era of 1862 where the Indian subcontinent only had trio of universities, this movie recounts the time when Rabindranath Tagore was scarcely a year old and India was still reeling from the reverberations of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857 that ignited the spark for freedom. The storyline reveals a tale, undeterred by the challenges, of an audacious act of a solitary person in a significant legal dispute. This true-life narrative has only come to light in Maharaj after lying under wraps for over a century and a half.

Netflix, in collaboration with Yash Raj Films, is bringing the true bravery of Karsandas Mulji to the big screen in the film ‘Maharaj’, scheduled for its premiere on the 14th of June. This film draws its inspiration from a real-life defamation case and prominently showcases the impressive acting debut of Junaid Khan.

Mulji, recognized as a journalist and social crusader, was an early advocate for women’s rights and societal transformation. His schooling took place at Mumbai’s Elphinstone College, guided by the popular scholar and leader Dadabhai Naoroji. Mulji emphasized the necessity of allowing widows to remarry, took a stand for disadvantaged groups, and was instrumental in facilitating societal changes.

The movie Maharaj, under the direction of Siddharth P Malhotra, features skilled actors like Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey, with an enticing guest appearance by Sharvari.
