A wine expert visited Wetherspoons to offer an honest assessment of the pub chain’s wine list – and appears to have been pleasantly surprised.
In a video shared on TikTok, wine connoisseur Tom Gilbey said he’d headed down to The Rocket, a Wetherspoons pub in Putney, London, to “check out the wine list”.
While taking a look through the wines Wetherspoons had to offer, a rather shocked Tom said: “Oh my God! They’ve actually got half decent wine!”
In terms of reds, he highlighted a “very, very good Shiraz made by Grant Burge”, which was selling at under £20 a bottle and £3.81 a glass, as particularly promising. He also said he couldn’t pick out any “offenders” from the list in terms of price, noting how the Malbec was just £17.
The Grant Burge Shiraz was the drink Tom opted to try, and things didn’t get off to a great start when he noticed a “little bit of lipstick” on the glass.
He also wasn’t too impressed by the vessel itself, joking: “Lovely big fat wine glass, so if I throw it against the wall it’s going to be absolutely fine.”
But the taste was a different story. Again somewhat taken aback, Tom said: “You know what? It tastes as if it hasn’t been opened forever. It’s actually really good!”
Tom decided to pair the Shiraz with a Wetherspoons burger and chips – a slight downgrade on some of the other food pairings he has sampled in previous TikTok videos.
And he wasn’t impressed with the food after taking a bite, claiming he would rather eat his “own shoe”.
However, the wine buff took another swig of the Shiraz to wash it down and remained impressed by the drink.
“This goes really really well, with a fantastically revolting burger,” he added. Overall, Tom gave the Wetherspoons wine list 8/10. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the burger got just 2/10.
