Manipur Congress seeks Rs 200 crore hailstorm relief for state

Manipur Congress party has requested the Centre to declare the recent hailstorm destruction as a natural disaster and provide a relief of Rs 200 crore to the affected people. Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra in a letter to Prime minister Narendra Modi sought the attention of the Prime minister towards the recent unprecedented natural disaster in the form of hailstorm with strong winds which hit the state in different parts of Manipur on May 5.

The hailstorm affected a large section of the state and the people of Manipur have not yet experienced such a natural disaster in its recent history, it said. The disaster has affected nearly thousands of houses and affected lakhs of people of Manipur, it mentioned.

The letter stated that considering the seriousness of the issue, the government should declare it as a natural disaster and accordingly also grant a central government’s relief of a minimum of Rs 200 crore for the affected people of Manipur in a time-bound manner, in the larger interest of the people of Manipur.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh recently said that deputy commissioners are assessing the damage caused by the hailstorm.

He said that Centre has released Rs 6.9 Crore to assist the state. More funds are likely to come. Talking to media persons he had said, “We are assessing total damage like on houses, livestock, and agriculture. We will provide compensation.”

The CM said: “Under SDRF we have sanctioned Rs 6.9 Crore. We have started providing essential commodities and CGI sheets. Major damage has taken place in Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Churachandpur. We have opened 42 relief camps.”The chief minister said that there is a huge surge in demand for CGI sheets and we are trying to make them available.
