President Metsola statement: two years into Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine
EP President Roberta Metsola will open the plenary session at 17.00 with a statement on the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A resolution will be put to a vote on Thursday.
MEPs to debate ECB policy with President Christine Lagarde
Inflation, efforts to curb it, possible interest rate cuts, addressing the risks posed by climate change to the financial system and economic slow-downs in some member states are set to be the focus of the annual debate with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde and Commissioner McGuinness from around 17.15. A resolution on the ECB’s 2023 work will be put to a vote on Tuesday.

Expanding the list of environmental crimes and introducing new sanctions
In the evening, MEPs will debate with Commissioner Breton new rules to protect the environment through criminal law. The directive provides an updated list of crimes including illegal timber trade, depletion of water resources and breaches of EU chemicals legislation, and introduces penalties including imprisonment and fines. The final vote on the text agreed with Council will take place on Tuesday, followed by a press conference with the rapporteur.

Transparent and secure paid political advertising
From around 18.30, MEPs will debate a new regulation on transparency and targeting of political advertising, notably online, with Commission Vice-President Jourová. The new rules will enhance the integrity of election campaigns and help fight disinformation and foreign interference. The final vote on the text agreed with Council is scheduled for Tuesday, followed by a press conference with the rapporteur.

In brief
Platform workers/blockage in Council. In an evening debate with Commissioner Schmit, MEPs are expected to call on the EU member states to end their current blockage of the Platform Work Directive, which aims to improve platform workers’ conditions.
Soaring food prices. MEPs will debate with Commissioner Hoekstra the causes of the rise in food prices and how to tackle the social consequences, from around 20.30.
