WHAT IS A KILLER PARADOX ABOUT? [SPOILERS]
The 8-episode series tells the story of Lee Tang (played by Choi Woo Shik), a young man in his 20s who has big dreams but no means to secure them. He lives a pathetic life, stealing off his friends, working a dead part time job, and wants his parents to pay for his foreign trip. All of this without doing any actual efforts to lead a better life. He was bullied as a high school student and has carried the trauma all his life. As fate would have it, on a fateful night, all his trauma culminates into a moment of rage. He ends up killing a man who attacked him. Soon, it is found that the man was a serial killer on the loose and was off the radar for some time. His death opened several old cases too. Lee Tang feels remorse and shame for his deed but the news gives him a sense of imparting justice. Detective Jang Nan Gam (played by Son Suk Ku) is a no-nonsense police officer who believes his gut more than the official orders. He is hot on Lee Tang’s heels but there is nothing concrete tying Lee Tang to the murder. But the tale doesn’t end here. Lee Tang is blackmailed by a blind woman whom he also ends up killing. Thus begins a tale of rage-filled murders by Lee Tang. He is still living his pathetic life, now with more reclusion than before, but he finds a sense of peace after killing those who have bad credits to their name.

After half the episodes are done, we see that there is more to the story. We see Roh Bin (played by Kim Yo Han) who grew up with the idea that he has to impart justice outside of the law. He sets up a system of monitoring and surveillance. He contacts people whom he thinks are “superheroes” with powers which make them fit to commit the murders. He gives them all tactical support. As the show progresses, we see that Roh Bin and Jang Nan Gam have known each other for a while. Roh Bin’s work with Lee Tang hasn’t been his first rodeo. Roh Bin finds goodness in Lee Tang and until the very end he strives hard to let Lee Tang live a free life.

In A Killer Paradox, the title of the series is aptly justified. A murder is never a good thing to commit, but what if that act is clouded by a delusional sense of justice and correcting the wrongs? What if the victim is someone who has had bad credit to their name? Does that justify their death? Does that wash off the sins from the perpetrator? The drama raises these questions via Lee Tang’s acts. He, who first killed on impulse, later went on a killing spree by calling it an act of justice. He, like Roh Bin, was disillusioned under the idea that he could commit a crime and get away with it. He just dug himself into a deeper and deeper hole after he failed to come clean of his crime after the first murder.

As the show progresses, we see the color palette move from bright to dark. What was filled with color earlier was replaced by a mundane grayscale. Each episode is just about 60 minutes long. The slow motion shots during each kill by Lee Tang, the hyper realistic hallucinations of the dead victims and also the back and forth with Roh Bin’s story arc, add to the appeal and effect of the scene. Director Lee Chang Hee who has previously given us stunning shows like Strangers from Hell and The Vanished, brings his directing magic to the screen once again. The scenes where the dead come back to haunt Lee Tang are nothing less than a horror story of their own.

A Killer Paradox tells us that all crimes have to be paid for. There is no escaping from it. Sooner or later, your bad deeds catch up to you. Lee Tang lives in seclusion now, and has a life now, but at what cost. If he had come clean the first time, perhaps he would have lead a different life and had the chance to visit the Rocky Mountains in real life instead of just staring at the painting.

Human nature is quite fickle. A Killer Paradox gives us a glimpse into how humans justify their actions, use others for selfish gains and at the end of the day still think they deserve a shot at living a remorse-free life. Lee Tang’s actions cannot be justified, even if he did kill people who have killed in the past. Killing a human is never a good deed, and the laws of morality hang tight over such deeds. A Killer Paradox makes the viewers think, and think deep. It questions one’s moral standing and ideas. It makes you launch into an internal debate of what is wrong and what is right. It also shows the ugly side of the society where humans are nothing but pieces of flesh and bones for each other.

A KILLER PARADOX ENDING EXPLAINED:
In the first half of the series, there is a touch of dark comedy to the events, but that soon washes off as the acts become more and more severe. Technically, none of these individuals would have known each other if not for Lee Tang’s first murder. It is strange how fate works. People who were strangers yesterday, are after each other today.

Lee Tang’s life prior to becoming a criminal is a pathetic and frustrated lifestyle. He wants things easy and served on a plate. Sure, he has limited resources to work with, but he does not make any working attempts to get out of the pit. He has no interest in his studies at the university but wishes to go to Canada and study there. He is disillusioned by the fact that going abroad would be as exciting as he sees on the vlogs. For an individual who leads such a frustrating life, such an act of impulse was on the cards soon.

With Jang Nan Gam, we see that the man wants to bring the criminals to justice at any cost. He even works on his suspension to get justice served the right way. In a pitiful way, he is embroiled in the case in a personal manner too. The entry of Song Chon (played by Lee Hee Joon) adds a stunning twist to the tale. He is a former detective turned killer on the loose. He is after Lee Tang and so is Detective Jang. Song Chon and Detective Jang go a long way. Song Chon attacked Jang’s father all those years ago which left Jang feeling embittered for not bringing the perpetrator to justice. Despite being overcome by vendetta, eventually, Detective Jang plays by the book but skirts around the gray area of justice and the ‘right thing’ just a little bit to clear his conscience.

So what happens in the end? Following his father’s funeral, Jang is investigated after Song Chon and Roh Bin’s deaths. Lee Tang has escaped to Thailand and subsequently deported back to South Korea. Jang does not name Lee in the case investigation, framing Roh Bin as the true orchestrator of the murders. Yet, a chilling revelation ensues when a new murder takes place in South Korea, hinting Jang that Lee has returned to Korea and resumed his vigilante pursuit.

The open ending gives emotional resonance, whether one sees Lee Tang as a hero or a shadowy figure, is open to interpretation. It also leaves a window for season 2 and stories related to Jang and Lee.
