Pretty English village named one of the best to visit in the country – and is even where Ringo Starr first performed

A TINY village has been named one of the best in the UK to visit – and has a very famous claim to fame.

Port Sunlight was created in 1888, and was one of the “earliest urban planning examples in the UK” which has survived.

It was originally created by William Lever to house workers at his Sunlight Soap workers at the Lever Brothers factory.

Later becoming Unilever, the village has since been named one of the best villages in the UK to visit.

The study, conducted by Which?, placed Port Sunlight in fourth, only beaten by Wells, Avebury and Corfe Castle.

The study said: “This concept of an ideal village, just a 15-minute drive from Liverpool, continues to draw visitors with its fascinating mix of architectural styles across 900 listed buildings.

“Despite its small size – it has fewer than 1,500 residents – Port Sunlight got five stars for attractions. “

Now, the village has more than 900 Grade II listed buildings, including The Bridge Inn pub now owned by Greene King and also offers overnight stays.

Snacks can be found at the Tudor Rose tea Rooms or the Lady Lever Art Gallery, also home to some of the most extensive Wedgewood collection in the world.

There are also more than 130 acres of gardens to explore, with guided walking tours from the Port Sunlight Museum, although you can also find self-led trails

Other attractions include the interactive SoapWorks attraction, where kids can learn how to make soap and why it bubbles, as well as the Port Sunlight Museum to learn about the towns history as well as pick up some souvenirs at the gift shop.

Head to the Hulme Hall too, which was where Ringo Star first performed with The Beatles.

Other claims to fame even include Peaky Blinders, And Chariots of Fire, along with the Tolkien biopic and TV shows including Antiques Road Show and Songs of Praise.

There is the Twitchers Museum Adventure Trail for with activity sheets and stickers for kids, as well as half term events with Science experiments and Soap experiences.

It’s easy to get to Port Sunlight – its around 20 minutes from Liverpool by car, or you can get the train to either Bebington or Port Sunlight station.
