ANCYL demands meeting with Minister

The ANC Youth League(ANCYL) has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Heath Dr Joe Phaahla, in order to find a solution regarding the near 1000 unemployed doctors who have completed the internship and community service.

This comes after doctor’s union the South African Medical Association Trade Union (SAMATU) revealed the plight of the newly qualified doctors.

SOLUTION TO FUNDING DOCTORS EMPLOYMENT

The union stated that it has become recurring matter on doctor unemployment with the department citing lack of funds as a reason for not retaining the doctors.

The ANCYL says it may have a solution.

“The ANCYL calls upon the national Department of Health to use the NHI (National Health Insurance) pilot funding from National Treasury to employ the 1000 unemployed medical doctors” says ANCYL Secretary General Mntuwoxolo Ngudle.

Ngudle adds that the NHI which has been passed in Parliament, will not succeed while there are unemployed doctors. The Youth League says it is patient to doctor ratio will also worsen. The party says it is disheartened by the unemployment of doctors

“The ANCYL is a disheartening statistic to the ANCYL which does not only signal a loss of valuable medical expertise but also underscores the paradox of understaffed hospitals amidst a surplus of ready and willing medical practitioners.”

ANCYL REQUESTS

Ngudle says that as a show of the leagues serious commitment to lasting solution, it will form a task team, which will be lead by the league health sub-committee chairperson Dr Mike Ramothwala.

The youth league is calling for:

  1. Lasting solutions for both doctors and dental professionals
  2. National Treasury to reprioritise budgets for funding 1000 doctors
  3. Intervention by provincial governments, cut subsidies and assist the national government with unemployment
  4. Private sector involvement in finding funding alternatives
  5. Move students placed in rural hospitals with non-compliant facilities to better ones.
  6. Medical aid schemes to assist in dealing with these matters
  7. A meeting between the HPCSA
