The town is already a very popular summer seaside spot for staycationers – and the new holiday park would be offer a new type of accommodation, just 10 minutes away by car.

Plans for the resort have been submitted to Cornwall Council for approval.

Should it get the green light, it would cover 70 hectares of agricultural land in the county and would include both holiday rentals and privately-owned holiday homes.

The plans also include several facilities for visitors, including a swimming pool, a spa, a gym, a swimming lake, an activity hub, shops a food court with restaurant, bar and café, a dog walking area and running and walking trails.

Elsewhere, there would be up to 16 units of staff accommodation, some central facilities buildings and a solar farm with associated battery storage.

The resort would cost between £50-60million to create.

The request comes from Kingsley Leisure Developments Limited, a company by Cornish family, The Simpsons.

A planning statement from the development company gave assurances about their dedication to the park and how much it would benefit the local economy,

It reads “The Green Ridge Resort would represent a circa £50 to £60 million capital investment in the local area.

“It would generate 56 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs for each year of its give-year construction phase, 175 FTE direct jobs during its operation and enough operational and visitor expenditure to generate 350 FTE jobs.

“[Kingsley Leisure] are fully committed, together with their development partners, to the delivery of the Green Ridge Resort.”

Mock up pictures show some of the lodges built onto platforms in a lake, while others show stilted accommodation, surrounded by woodland.

It is expected that around 35 per cent, or 150 units of the accommodation would be for rentals while the other 65 per cent, or 250 units would be privately owned.

Despite those assurances promised by developers, residents have been less than impressed with the plans, with some describing them as “monstrous” on Cornwall Council’s planning portal.

They wrote: “Absolutely appalled by the prospect of this monstrous proposal.

“The area does not want for nor need anything of this scale, especially during the peak summer where travelling into or out of Newquay is already an ordeal.”

Another said: “All roads into Newquay are already completely jammed in the winter let alone the summer.

“Traffic has never been so bad. This new resort will just add more chaos and unnecessary extra traffic.”
