Cameroon: Privatisation of Camtel and the furore behind the scenes

President Paul Biya has made up his mind: Cameroon Telecommunications, known as Camtel, is not for sale.

“… the president of the republic has ordered you to postpone any rehabilitation plan aimed at privatising Camtel, or any segment of its business,” says a memo from the secretary-general of the presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.

The memo, which is addressed to the minister of finance, Louis-Paul Motazé, has set Cameroon’s social networks abuzz since 7 December and is causing controversy in the capital.
