CHANDIGARH: After more than three months of investigations and departmental probes, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the allegations of sexual harassment against SP Sumit Kumar formally closed the case file. The team has submitted its report to DGP on Monday.
This comes as a major relief for Sumit Kumar, who not only faced charges but was also shifted out of a district to ensure a fair probe. According to reports, the ADGP-headed committee concluded that none of the complainants or victims came forward to record their statements.
Additionally, according to officials, no such officer was found in whose name the complaint was initiated. The committee also testified 168 other women officers of the district, and none of them supported the allegations.
Notably, the committee is also understood to have examined the service records of all the women officers posted in the Jind district during the tenure of Sumit Kumar.
It may be recalled that the cause of action dates back to the last week of October when an anonymous complaint was filed and went viral, accusing Kumar, who was the SP of Jind, of sexual harassment. Besides Kumar, the letter also accused a DSP-level woman officer of supporting Kumar by pressuring women officers.
Consequently, the Haryana DGP initially constituted a committee headed by Hisar SP, but later the entire probe was handed over to the SIT headed by ADGP Mamta Singh. The other two officers included a DIG-level officer and Hisar SP.
It is understood that the YouTuber who first aired the news and whose system was reportedly used in mailing the complaint went elusive, hence the investigations could not pick up speed.
Meanwhile, the Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW) also took cognisance and started the hearing. After hearing Sumit Kumar, the Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia invited the victims to join the investigations. The details of the Commission’s findings are awaited.
While the probe was in progress, Kumar and the woman DSP were shifted out of the Jind district.
