Hot weather sees Western Cape dam levels DROP latest update

The latest official dam level stats for the Western Cape show that cumulatively the six major dams in the province are just above 80% of capacity.

The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – all saw significant increases during the last winter.

However, as the summer season continues, those levels have dropped significantly.

There is a sprinkling of rain forecast for parts of the Western Cape in the coming days, but nothing that will see a rise in the dam levels.

Up on last year

The City of Cape Town uploaded its latest stats on Tuesday, 28 January.

The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 81.7% of total storage.

That’s down from the 83.7% the previous week.

The current levels are, however, marginally up on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 81.2%.

Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the province’s total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 81.5% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 81.9%.

Western Cape residents need no reminding of life during the ‘Day Zero’ water crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2018.
