The Kiffness has sparked controversy with another debatable tweet – this time over his beliefs that “most whites fought against Apartheid.”
The outspoken muso – real name David Scott – often posts about his views on everything from crime to corruption to who is in cabinet. He is known for his quirky music, sampling everything from cats to Donald Trump.
THE KIFFNESS SPARKS OUTRAGE WITH TWEET
Earlier this week, The Kiffness shared his strong opinions on what he claimed was South Africa’s “nonsensical race laws.”
He tweeted: “As a South African who’s witnessed my country slowly deteriorate over the last 30 years because of nonsensical race-based laws, I support any country that values people on their merit over anything else”.
He then responded to a tweep, who has since deleted his post, adding: “Most whites fought against Apartheid and fought for a non-racial society.
“Today there are more race-based laws in South Africa than there were during Apartheid – only this time they are against white people.”
The Kiffness went on to list several laws – including the Employment Equity Act – which he believed discriminated against white South Africans.
He also mentioned the 1992 Apartheid referendum – limited to white South Africans – where 68.73% of the voters agreed to reform.
BACKLASH FROM THE PUBLIC
Naturally, The Kiffness’s strong opinions riled up many social media users, including many prominent names like Siv Ngesi, muso Holly Rey and comedian,Bouwer Bosch.
A few social media users – who claimed to be white South Africans – disputed the muso’s claims about wanting to end Apartheid.
@Oom_Rugby: “I was there, but that was not the case. Many whites supported it. Most went along with it because it gave them a lekker life.”
@GerhardKempICL: “Totally false. Most whites supported Apartheid (viz. election results since 1948). If your evidence of ‘fought against apartheid’ is the referendum result of 1992, then there is a serious problem with the definition of what ‘fought against’ means in any meaningful way“.
@catewoodhunter: “As a white person, I can say that most white South Africans did not fight against Apartheid. Most lived their lives benefitting from the Apartheid state. Some felt uncomfortable but pushed that aside. A small percentage knew it was wrong and tried to find ways to oppose it and support black people, and then a smaller percentage knew it was wrong and fought tooth and nail against it and put their lives at risk and in danger. Every other white person I knew growing up either knew or did nothing about it”.
Bouwer Bosch posted of The Kiffnness’s tweets: “Most white people did not fight against Apartheid. If that is the truth, why was Apartheid going on for 40+ years? Only at the referendum election in the 90’s the majority said ‘Stop Apartheid”. After like 40 years of injustice”.
