Hailing from Mahagaon, a village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, Ramesh Gholap came from a financially strained lower-middle-class family. He was born to Gorakh Gholap, who ran a small bicycle repair shop. Ramesh’s family of four, including his mother Vimal Gholap and his brother, was initially supported by his father’s modest income. However, their financial situation took a turn for the worse when Gorakh’s health deteriorated due to alcoholism, forcing him to close his shop.
Demonstrating immense resilience, Ramesh’s mother, Vimal, began selling bangles in nearby villages to make ends meet. Despite suffering from polio in his left leg, Ramesh joined his mother, selling bangles on the streets to help support their family.
Ramesh was a bright student and a star at his school in Barsi. However, in 2005, his life took a heartbreaking turn when he received the news of his father’s passing. Struggling financially, he didn’t have enough money for the bus fare to attend the funeral. With the support of his neighbors, he was able to reach his father’s last rites. This experience had a profound impact on Ramesh, making him realize that education was his way out of poverty. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to his studies with unwavering determination, determined to create a better future for himself and his family.
Although Ramesh was an outstanding student, financial limitations led him to choose a stable job over pursuing his dreams. He completed a degree in arts from an open university and started working as a teacher in 2009. However, a serendipitous meeting with a tehsildar during his college years sparked a new ambition in him. Inspired by the encounter, he decided to quit his job and move to Pune to prepare for the UPSC exam. With the unwavering support of his mother, who worked tirelessly to save money for his education, Ramesh’s journey was about to take a transformative turn.
Ramesh then moved to Pune to prepare for the UPSC exams, dedicating himself to self-study for six months before attempting the civil services exam. However, fate was not on his side, and his first attempt in 2010 ended in failure. Despite facing failure in his first attempt in 2010, his unwavering commitment bore fruit when he cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2012. Achieving an All India Rank (AIR) of 287 under the handicapped quota, he realized his dream of becoming an IAS officer, overcoming countless challenges along the way. Today, IAS Ramesh Gholap serves as the Joint Secretary in the Jharkhand Energy Department.
