Broccoli might seem like a straightforward vegetable to prepare, but it turns out many of us have not been doing it “properly”. While many of us have likely been cooking broccoli for years, one dad has now taken to TikTok to share where we’ve all been going wrong.
Sidney, a dad who posts life hacks on social media, was amazed to discover that placing the whole broccoli in a pan makes the florets effortlessly detachable once they’re cooked. In a video on TikTok revelation, Sidney said: “Here’s something I didn’t know until I was in my 30s: broccoli should be chopped after it’s boiled?”
He then demonstrates by submerging the broccoli with the floret end down in boiling water and, after ten minutes, he easily removes it using tongs. With the florets now incredibly tender, Sidney can slice up the entire broccoli in one go, exclaiming: “It’s already falling off! Look at that, perfect.”
This method is not just fast but also minimises prep time and reduces the mess involved in cooking. The comment section of Sidney’s video is full of people amazed by the simplicity of the technique, with one person admitting: “This has made my life so much easier.”
Another said: “I went to culinary school and didn’t know this!” A third added: “42 years old and I haven’t been cooking broccoli properly”. The healthy recipe app MyRealFood has also endorsed this approach as a game-changer in the kitchen.
In an eye-opening clip shared on their social media, a chef from the app revealed: “Did you know about this trick for cooking broccoli? All you need to do is submerge the head of the broccoli in boiling water and then you can cut it off super-easy and super-quick.”
The chef also recommends eating the stem, as it is “delicious”, adding: “Just slice [the stem] into little slices, put it in the frying pan with some soy sauce, and there you have it.”
