Virgin Hotel Edinburgh was named as one of the most popular destinations in the UK by Hotels.com.

In the travel site’s 2024 wrap up, the capital was named as the third top destination for travellers – only being beaten by London and Manchester.

And Virgin Hotel was one of the most searched for places to stay by guests.

Over the festive holidays the hotel held a very special teatime event – and we were invited along to try it out.

Inspired by Julia Donaldson’s enchanting tale, Jonty Gentoo – The Adventures of a Penguin, The Little Penguins Winter Tea was held in partnership with Edinburgh Zoo.

Hosted in the stunning surroundings of Greyfriars Hall, it saw families enjoy a traditional afternoon tea while learning about the fascinating birds.

An Edinburgh Zoo Ranger was on hand to teach the kids – including my little lad Jimmy – all there is to know about the aquatic wonders.

Jimmy even plucked up to ask the expert why penguins have flippers – apparently, as well as helping with swimming, they balance penguins out after they ave eaten too much.

And I am sure there will have been many guests feeling stuffed after the event, with the beautiful and delicious goodies on offer.

My son has some food allergies, and the staff couldn’t have been kinder catering for them – he’s still going on about the chocolate cherry cake some time on.

The kids even got to see penguins live, having a feeding session, via a video feed from Edinburgh Zoo’s Penguin Rock as well as taking part in some fun interactive games.

And the day was rounded off with a reading of the Julia Donaldson book, while all the young guests got to take home a little, fluffy penguin as a keepsake.

The hotel hosts afternoon teas every week in the charming Oculus lounge.

Look out for more special tea events in the future.
