5 shopping events in Hong Kong this weekend August 2-4, from Cat Expo to fashion pop-up

Shopping for ourselves can be therapeutic, but it also feels nice to spoil our pets, and this weekend’s Cat Expo is the purr-fect place for those wanting to indulge their fur babies.

Central Market is also worth a visit; it will host a variety of activities to mark Hong Kong Tramways’ 120th anniversary. And South Korean label Emis’ pop-up is a good bet for fashion lovers.

1. Cat Expo 2024

Cat lovers are in for a treat this weekend as the city’s annual Cat Expo returns to Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from August 2-4, offering art, music, performances and lectures as well as shopping.

A selection of Japanese-style lucky cats will be displayed at the Hong Kong Cat Expo 2024.

A diverse range of cat products including the latest toys and cat food will be showcased. Highlights of the expo include the Cat Fanciers Association International Cat Show, in which cats will be judged based on various attributes, and workshops on cat grooming, feline health and more.

2. Emis pop-up

K-pop star Jisoo of Blackpink loves funky South Korean brand Emis, and now it has arrived in Hong Kong, with a pop-up store at Langham Place in Mong Kok until August 31. The pop-up features a video/photo booth and hot seasonal items such as trendy mesh caps and cool retro bags.

3. Hong Kong Tramways 120th anniversary event

Hong Kong’s trams – affectionately known as “ding dings” – have been part of the city since they began rattling their way along the streets of Hong Kong Island in 1904.

To celebrate its 120th anniversary, Hong Kong Tramways has teamed up with cartoon character McDull to host a fun event at Central Market until September 8.

With the theme “Moved by Our Every Journey”, the event includes immersive experiences, pop-ups and limited-edition HK Tramways x McDull merchandise, including commemorative stamps (HK$168), gold coins (HK$488) and cute model trams (HK$98).

Hong Kong Tramways has also teamed up with phone accessories brand Casetify, and has another collaboration with candle brand BeCandle offering limited-edition diffusers (HK$880) and limited-edition flasks (HK$368) made by Hong Kong company Camel.

4. Clinique pop-up

French beauty brand Clinique has opened a pop-up store at the Harbour City mall in Tsim Sha Tsui that explores the brand’s “dermatologist-guided” products. The “Brighter, Firmer Magic Lab” pop-up runs until August 5 and has installations that visitors can interact with.

5. Lojel Experience Hub

Luggage, bag and accessory brand Lojel, which was founded in Japan in 1989 and is now headquartered in Hong Kong, is getting creative by hosting an “Experience Hub” until September 8.

The event, which takes place at the brand’s flagship store on Fashion Walk in Causeway Bay, will feature paintings by Zoie Lam; the Hong Kong artist’s whimsical characters perfectly complement Lojel’s signature Cubo, Voja, and Niru lines.

Guests can also take part in painting workshops hosted by Lam, after which they can take home a customised Lojel product. The workshops will be held every Sunday in August from 4pm-5pm.
