2. Love Letter

Japanese writer-director Shunji Iwai’s 1995 feature debut remains one of his very best films to date and this re-release represents an all-too-rare opportunity to catch this classic romance on the big screen.

A big hit across Asia when it was first released, Love Letter tells the bittersweet story of how Miho Nakayama’s bereaved protagonist sends a letter to her fiancé’s address two years after his death – only to receive a surprise reply that kicks off a series of emotional reveals at both ends of the correspondence.

Love Letter opens in cinemas today.

3. Skywalkers: A Love Story

An unusual blend of sporting event and romance, this Netflix documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeff Zimbalist follows a young Russian couple, Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, as they illegally scale tall buildings around the world and snap stunning photos there as their prizes.

While certainly not an activity to be condoned, the film offers us the vicarious pleasure of visiting places we could have never imagined of going ourselves, including high up on Hong Kong’s Central Plaza and Tsing Ma bridge. 4. Ready or Rot

One of the best Hong Kong romantic comedies released in the past few years, this surprisingly engaging sequel to the 2021 comedy film Ready or Knot finds long-time couple Guy (Carlos Chan Ka-lok) and Heidi (Michelle Wai Sze-nga) finally engaged and mostly happy.

That is, until Guy’s domineering single mother, played by the always enthralling Elaine Jin Yan-ling, parachutes herself in from overseas to dictate every single aspect of the pair’s non-existent wedding plans.

This is also a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with the comedy style of emerging writer-director Anselm Chan Mou-yin, whose next film The Last Dance, starring Dayo Wong Tze-wah and Michael Hui Koon-man, looks set to be a major hit when it opens in cinemas in November. 5. Sweet Home season 3

When season 1 of this Korean horror drama series arrived back in December 2020, the pandemic-stricken world was momentarily in thrall of the webtoon adaptation’s vision of a post-apocalyptic dystopia infested with monsters.
While the show’s second season proved a disappointment when it launched last December, audiences who have stayed loyal to their beloved characters are still hoping for the best with this third and final season, which was shot concurrently with season 2. Season 1 star Lee Do-hyun is also set to return.

When this series finale opens, most of the characters are still living in a stadium under a strict system and leadership that is planning to usher in a new age of Neo-humans.
